Against this background life was uncertain, and people looked beyond the<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>selves to solve its <span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.05pt;\">r<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05pt;\">i<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.05pt;\">d<\/span>dles and to <span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.05pt;\">b<\/span>e ensured <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;\">of <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; letter-spacing: -0.05pt; line-height: 150%;\">st<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;\">ability.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;\">Every form of pain, <span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05pt;\">is<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.05pt;\">f<\/span>ortune, sorrow or suffering;every illness and sickness; every death, whether of an old person or the inf<span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05pt;\">a<\/span>nt chil<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.05pt;\">d<\/span>; ev<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.05pt;\">e<\/span>ry <span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.05pt;\">f<\/span>ailu<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.05pt;\">r<\/span>e of the crop in the fields, of huntingin the wilderness or of fishingin the <span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">w<\/span>aters; every bad o<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>en or drea<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>: the<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.05pt;\">s<\/span>e are all the <span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>anifestations of evil that hu<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>an experie<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.05pt;\">n<\/span>ces are bla<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>ed on so<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>ebody <span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.1pt;\">i<\/span>n the corporate society.<\/span> <span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;\">As a result, young people in Za<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>bia were taught s<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.05pt;\">t<\/span>rictly how to observe the <a href=\"https:\/\/motivemeaning.blogspot.com\/2022\/03\/african-traditional-religion.html\">religious rituals<\/a>, cere<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>onies, laws, and avoidance of taboos, for the sake <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;\">of their own survival<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b style=\"text-align: left;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;\">Sin and Salvation<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;\">The conceptof salvation a<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>ong <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">African traditionalists was<\/span> <span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;\">deter<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>ined by what one was saved from. Africans conce<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">p<\/span>tualize sin in ter<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>s of \u201cbig sins\u201d and \u201c<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>inor sins\u201d.&nbsp; Big sins are listed as violations of tribal taboos or revealingto wo<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>en and the uninitiated the secrets <span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.05pt;\">o<\/span>f what takes place at i<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.05pt;\">n<\/span>itiation. Small si<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.05pt;\">n<\/span>s includetrespassing on a neighbour\u2019s property, failing to care for a neighbo<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.05pt;\">u<\/span>r\u2019s stock when the need arises, child abuse, and bitterness. A whi<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.05pt;\">t<\/span>e colour signified the purify<span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05pt;\">i<\/span>ng of the consciences of the offender and the offended. Young people were religi<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.05pt;\">o<\/span>usly instructedthat to be saved, therefore, was to be accepted first in the community of the living, then in the place of the dead. <span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.2pt;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;\">Death and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Afterlife\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Afterlife<\/a><\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;\">Most Za<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>bian tribes possessed <span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>yths explaining how death <span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">f<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05pt;\">i<\/span>rst ca<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>e into the world and one of the <span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>ost funda<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>ental featuresof traditional life was the r<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">e<\/span>lationship between the living and the living-dead. People accepteddeath, but every hu<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>an d<span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05pt;\">e<\/span>ath was believed to have external causes. People had to discoverand state the c<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.05pt;\">a<\/span>uses of death. <span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.5pt;\">&nbsp;<\/span>These<\/span> <span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;\">causes were said to be the results of <span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>agic <span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.05pt;\">a<\/span>nd witchcraft or spirits who were off<span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05pt;\">e<\/span>nded and bore a grudge, or from a powerful curse.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;\">One or <span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>ore causesof death were to be given. Though death was accepted, it could be prevented because it was always caused by another agent. <span style=\"letter-spacing: 1.05pt;\">&nbsp;<\/span>At d<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.05pt;\">e<\/span>ath a person went to join the \u201cshades\u201d or \u201cliving-dead\u201d, for as long as he<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;\">\/she<\/span> <span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;\">was re<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>embered by those who re<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.05pt;\">a<\/span>in. During this ti<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>e, usually three or four generations, the person <span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05pt;\">i<\/span>ght visit his\/her f<span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05pt;\">o<\/span>r<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>er ho<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>e <span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05pt;\">a<\/span>nd see his\/her relatives and was thought to have a real interest in the welfareof the f<span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05pt;\">a<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>ily and clan, and to hover around the community.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;\">However,<\/span> <span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;\">there is a sense of separation<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;\">. P<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;\">eople cann<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.05pt;\">o<\/span>t say to hi<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05pt;\">\/<\/span>her, \u201cHere is a seat,sit down and let us prepare a <span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>eal for you.\u201d S<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;\">he<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;\">\/he appearsonly to one or t<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">w<\/span>o <span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05pt;\">e<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>bers of the fa<span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.1pt;\">m<\/span>ily, particularly the older ones and enquires about the welfare of the others.
